Steven Smith handed one-Test suspension for ball tampering Australia captain Steve Smith has been handed a one-Test suspension and fined 100 percent of his match fee by the ICC, after he confessed in a post-day press conference on Saturday (March 24) that he was party to a ploy to tamper the condition of the ball during the ongoing Newlands Test against South Africa. Smith will thus miss the fourth Test, to be played in Johannesburg from March 30.
Smith, Warner stood down as Australia captain, vice-captain Steve Smith and David Warner have been stood down as Australia's captain and vice-captain for the remainder of the ongoing third Test match against South Africa in Cape Town, in the wake of the former's confession to premeditated ball-tampering late on the Saturday (March 24) evening. Tim Paine, the wicketkeeper-batsman, will take over the mantle of captaining the side, Cricket Australia said in a media release ahead of fourth day's play.
